Virtual STEMPlus: ʻĀina-Informatics & the COVID Variant Trackers Program

STEMplus Citizen Science

Virtual informational session to learn more about the ʻĀina-Informatics Network and our new Covid Variant Trackers lesson.

The ʻĀina-Informatics Network is a hui of educators advancing place-based and ethics-centered education in genetics and genomics. Our hands-on curriculum is powered by a mobile sequencing lab, in-class support through classroom visits, and expertise of Eric Tong and Joanna Kobayashi. We are looking for partner schools and teachers to join a collaboration between ‘Iolani School's ʻĀina-Informatics Network, UH Mānoa's Pacific Biodiversity Lab and the Department of Health to help sequence SARS-CoV-2 variants in Hawaiʻi. This opportunity empowers local students to contribute towards the surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 as it continues to impact communities across the islands. We will come to your classroom, bring the mobile sequencing lab and curriculum, and help teach your students to sequence and analyze this important and timely data. Meeting agenda:

4:30-4:45pm: Padlet Intros/Grounding Activity

4:45-4:55pm: What is ʻĀina-Informatics? Curriculum Overview

4:55-5:30pm: GM papaya virtual lab

5:30-5:50pm: COVID variant trackers module overview featuring guest presenter, Ethan Hill

5:50-Pau: Q&A and announcements

Ethan Hill (ʻIolani '14) completed his B.S. in Biology in 2018 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and is currently pursuing a MS in microbiology as a member of the Pacific Biodiversity Lab under Dr. Marguerite Butler at UH. Ethan is interested in understanding the evolutionary process of speciation through the study of phylogenetics and biogeography. He is currently researching how SARS-CoV-2 spreads within the state of Hawaiʻi using genomics, phylogenetics and biogeographic models. His previous research in the Pacific Biodiversity Lab includes updating a comprehensive phylogeny and understanding the biogeographic spread of microhylid frogs from Papua New Guinea.
