Do I have to pay anything to join?

Accepted Answer

No; the group has always been free. You can join on Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/HoustonSFFWriters/), but you also do not have to join to attend.

Question 2

Do I have to have published a book to join?

Accepted Answer

No! Publishing doesn't make you a writer. Writing makes you a writer. We accept people in all parts of their journey, from those who just have that itch to write but haven't committed words to paper yet to full-blown professionals with a fifty-book oeuvre behind them.

Question 3

Do you have a critique group I can join/will you critique my stuff?

Short answer: no. Longer answer: not yet. Longest answer: we're still getting our sea legs as organizers, and we hope to be able to provide this in the future.

Question 4

Who is hosting/running the group?

Accepted Answer

We're Tomeworks Editing Collective(www.tomeworksedits.com). Basically, we're an organization of professional editors. The primary runners of the Meetup are Shannon, Anna, and Sean. We have all been active members in the past, and when we saw there was a need, we felt compelled to help.

Question 5

Are you the same people who have run the group before?

Accepted Answer

No. There have been many organizers before us. In 2004, technically Meetup itself was the founder. Kim Kofmel took over when organizational roles became available. Around 2006, Keri Bas took the reigns and was the leader for most of its history. Daniel Ellis took over for a short time in 2024.

Question 6

Do you provide food for events?

Accepted Answer

No; you can purchase food from Melange Creperie (https://www.houstoncrepes.com/our-menu#future-plans-1), but you are not required to. Please do not bring outside food and drink into the restaurant.
