Hungarian Folk Singing Workshops with Zina Bozzay (Individual Classes)

Inspired by traditional songs and vocal techniques from Eastern Europe and Eurasia, Kitka is an American women’s vocal arts ensemble and vocal music institute that cultivates global community and cross-cultural understanding through the practice of collective singing. Dedicated to fostering appreciation for music rooted in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian women's vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries offolk song as a living and evolving expressive art form through the creation and performance of new music for women's voices. Kitka's core organizational programs and services include a San Francisco Bay Area-based series of concerts, workshops, artist residencies, leadership of community choirs and community sings; in-school programs; regional, national, and international touring; recording, publication, and broadcast projects; commissioning; and adventuresome multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary collaborations with some of traditional song masters and contemporary performance-makers.

Proof of vaccination with ID verification will be required of all participants.Workshop Schedule:10:30-11am: Hungarian Language Pronunciation Coaching (Optional)11-am-1pm: Singing WorkshopJoin us to learn beautiful Hungarian folk songs! This workshop series will include a variety of village songs from the oral tradition taught directly from source recordings (not composed songs or arrangements). Participants receive village source recordings, a Hungarian pronunciation guide, ethnographic maps, song word sheets, and English translations, as well as background information on the songs and the style. Open to participants of all cultural, linguistic, and musical backgrounds, welcoming experienced singers as well as those without previous experience in the style. Based in Budapest, she does song collecting work around the Carpathian Basin and performs internationally both as a soloist and with her ensemble Vadalma. She has led the Hungarian Folk Singing Circle since 2010 with a focus on making this tradition accessible to English speakers, and teaches at the Hungarian Heritage House in Budapest as well as cultural centers across the diaspora.
