A fundraising event for New York Budo Association and the traditional Japanese Martial and Cultural Arts community in New York City.

<h3><em>$20 – INCLUDES LINKS FOR BOTH NIGHTS 9/17 &amp; 9/24 – you don&#x27;t need to purchase tickets for the second night.</em></h3><p>We are still struggling with the  Covid-19 pandemic and are in need of your support more than ever. Due to that crisis we were unable to hold any events in 2020. NYBA did it’s best to continue its mission by offering free online classes to all of its members (including the larger global Ryushin community which has members in Japan, Taiwan, Austria, Italy, France, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Russia) as well as free in-person classes for the public in Central and Fort Greene Park throughout the pandemic.</p><p>Our first fundraiser, UNITE 2019 was a tremendous success, we brought together eight independent (NYC based) traditional Japanese martial and cultural arts groups for one night and raised $7K. This was the first annual event designed for and by the Japanese Martial Arts community of NYC. After an extremely difficult year we are hoping to reignite our community in 2021. We hope that you will give your support in helping us achieve our goals, and wish to invite you to our fundraising event, UNITE 2021.</p><p>Our goals are simple; to continue to promote a deeper understanding of traditional culture, to help the NYC Martial and Cultural Arts community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, to encourage people to experience the benefits of practicing these arts, to help promote the different groups participating as well as funding our long-term goal of establishing a dedicated group practice space for traditional Japanese Martial and Cultural Arts in NYC.</p><p>The event will feature an Embu (demonstration) with a variety of traditional martial and performing arts, including Kendo, Iaido, Aikido, Kyudo, Taiko Drums, Naginata, Chado, and Shodo. <p>The main goals of this event are:</p><ul><li>To promote a deeper understanding of traditional Japanese Martial Arts &amp; Cultural Arts</li></ul><ul><li>To help the recovery of the Japanese Martial and Cultural art community of NYC after the COVID-19 pandemic.</li></ul><ul><li>To encourage the public to experience the intellectual, emotional, psychological, and physical benefits of these practices</li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrate a cross cultural exchange between traditional Japanese Arts and modern society</li></ul><ul><li>To establish and strengthen  a cohesive traditional Japanese Martial Arts community in NYC</li></ul><ul><li>To help sponsor a variety of Japanese Martial Arts masters from different disciplines to have annual seminars in NYC</li></ul><ul><li>To help raise funds to establish a permanent, dedicated practice space for traditional Japanese Martial and Cultural Performing Arts in NYC</li></ul><ul><li>To help help increase membership of the participating groups </li></ul><p>The overall outcome of this event will be the coming together of the traditional Japanese Martial Arts community in NYC to host a coordinated event. <h2><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iaido" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">IAIDO (居合道) JAPANESE SWORD</a></h2><p>Founded in 1963 by Yoshiteru Otani Sensei, an accomplished martial artist who also helped found the Japan Cultural Center. The mission of the <a href="https://newyorkbudoassociation.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>New York Budo Association (NYBA)</strong></a> is to sustain and disseminate the techniques, philosophies, and benefits of the Japanese martial arts, particularly the study of <a href="https://ryushinshouchiryu.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Ryushin Shouchi Ryu (RSR) (柳心照智流)</strong></a>, which derives from one of the ancient forms of sword styles (古武道). Under the NYBA’s stewardship, the Ryushin style has developed into an international network of martial arts practice extending to the West Coast of the United States, Latin America, and Europe. For the past 15 years, the NYBA has hosted the annual Ryushin North America seminar with Kunikazu Yahagi Sensei (the current headmaster), in coordination with the school’s affiliated groups in Connecticut, New Jersey, Portland, Santa Cruz, Miami, and Vancouver. In 2017, the NYBA was formally registered as a not-for-profit 501c-(3) organization.</p>

<h2><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_tea_ceremony" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">JAPANESE TEA CEREMONY (茶道)</a></h2><p><a href="https://www.uedasokochanoyu.com/ueda-s%C5%8Dko-ry%C5%AB/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Ueda Sōko-ryū (上田宗箇流)</strong></a> is a cultural aesthetic practice, or tradition, of Japanese tea ceremony that originated within the samurai class of feudal Japan. The founder from whom the tradition takes its name was Sengoku period warlord Ueda Sōko. The customs, etiquette and values of the samurai are woven throughout all aspects of the traditional practice of chanoyu, a practice that has continued unbroken for over 400 years.</p><p><a href="https://www.y-nagano.jp/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Yoshitsugu Nagano</strong></a> is a licenced tea master of Ueda Sōko-ryū and is currently based in NYC, and holds tea ceremonies as well as also offers tea ceremony classes. He’s been working to establish his style as a modern tea ceremony that incorporates new expressions and engagement into the traditional practice of the tea ceremony.</p>

<h2><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naginata" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NAGINATA (薙刀) POLE ARM</a></h2><p>The Naginata is a pole weapon and one of several varieties of traditionally made Japanese blades (nihonto). Naginata were originally used by the samurai class of feudal Japan, as well as by ashigaru (foot soldiers) and Sohei (warrior monks).</p><p><a href="http://www.gnynf.net/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>The Greater New York Naginata Federation</strong></a> is a not-for-profit organisation founded in the spring of 2006. The specific objectives and purposes of this federation shall be: to provide education in the traditional Japanese martial art of Naginata to the public. The means of providing said education includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of educational facilities, presentation of Naginata arts in public demonstrations, seminars, and ongoing classes. This federation acts as a regional affiliate of the USNF (United States Naginata Federation).</p>

<h2><a href="https://nykenshinkai.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">KENDO (剣道) FENCING</a></h2><p><a href="https://nykenshinkai.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Kendo is a traditional  Japanese martial art, which descended from swordsmanship (kenjutsu) and uses bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armour (bōgu). Today, it is widely practiced within Japan and many other nations across the world. Kendo is an activity that combines martial arts practices and values with strenuous sport-like physical activity.</p><p>Kenshinkai is located right in the heart of Manhattan. Although we are a relatively new dojo, having celebrated our tenth year in 2012, we have  many dedicated members who are pursuing both their individual and common goals through the practice of Kendo. If you happen to be in New York, we would be very happy to have you visit us.</p>

<h2><a href="https://www.kokacalligraphy.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">SHODO (書道) CALLIGRAPHY</a></h2><p><a href="https://www.kokacalligraphy.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Japanese calligrapher and performance artist who is based in New York, and Tokyo. Koka has been doing calligraphy for 13 years. She loves exhibiting, and performing her works. Koka's goal is letting people know the beauty of Japanese culture and calligraphy all over the world.</p>

<h2><a href="https://nycdokokai.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">KYUDO (弓道) ARCHERY</a></h2><p>The New York Kyudo Dokokai is a Kyudo (Japanese Archery) study group founded in 2012 by Head Coach Rick Beal and Senior Instructor Phil Ortiz. The style of archery is labeled as Zen Archery, and recognized under the name of Dokokai.</p><p>The history of New York City Dokokai runs parallel with the Kyudo Practice of senior instructor Phil Ortiz. Over the 38 years of practicing Kyudo under various styles including: All Nippon (federation style), Heki-Ryu Chikurin-Ha, and Zen Archery, Phil Ortiz met with Rick Beal to study Zen Archery in Pasadena, California. It would be within the last 2 years that the practice of Zen archery would become a need to be brought to New York and led by Phil Ortiz. Phil Ortiz alongside, while under the guidance of head coach Rick Beal have decided to organize the New York City Dokokai; which is the represented school of Zen archery in New York.</p>

<h2><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiko" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TAIKO DRUMS (太鼓)</a></h2><p><a href="http://omnytaiko.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>OMNY Taiko</strong></a> is a community taiko (Japanese drumming) group in New York City. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, but we are all united in our passion for sharing the beauty of taiko with the world. Through our drumming, we hope that the sound and spirit of taiko will resonate within your heart as it does within ours.</p><p>OMNY Taiko’s mission is to create community and strengthen the spirit through the art of taiko drumming. The sound of the taiko drum is as pure and as fundamental as the heartbeat and has the power to connect ourselves with those around us and with the universe at large. As such, we seek to develop our abilities as taiko players—rhythm, movement, teamwork, and spirit—and to promote taiko drumming through performances in the New York area and beyond.</p>

<h2><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aikido" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AIKIDO (合気道)</a></h2><p><a href="https://www.bondstreet.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong>Bond Street Dojo</strong></a> was founded in 1973 by Terry Dobson and Ken Nisson, and originally located at 49 Bond Street. Since 2018, the dojo has made its home in the East Harlem community. </p><p>After Terry and Ken’s departure in 1980, the dojo was established under Chris Jordan and Paul Kang, both of whom joined Bond Street as students of Terry Sensei and Ken Sensei in the 1970s. Today, Richard Webb (3rd dan) leads us as our Chief Instructor and Chris Jordan Sensei (6th dan) continues as one of our senior instructors.</p><p>​Bond Street Dojo (incorporated as New York Aikido Society, Inc.) is a not-for-profit organization established as a place for learning and practice of the martial art of aikido. We are governed by a board of directors elected from and by the membership.</p>

<h1><a href="https://www.newyorkbattodo.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">IAIDO (居合道) JAPANESE SWORD/TOYAMA RYU</a></h1><p>Byakkokan dojo (白虎館) was started in 2005 in NYC as a study group teaching Japanese swordsmanship. The name "Byakkokan" means the place for Byakko, which is the Chinese mythological spirit White Tiger. This school teaches the Japanese swordsmanship curriculum of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyama-ry%C5%AB" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toyama Ryu Batto Jutsu</a>, a style created for the Japanese military in 1925 by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakayama_Hakud%C5%8D" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nakayama Hakudo</a> and other prominent swordsmen at that time. The curriculum of the Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei and its U.S. counterpart, the <a href="https://www.usbattodo.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">U.S. Batto Do Federation</a> is taught here as well. </p><p>While we carry the name of Byakko, the kamon (the crest showed above) is called "Mitsuwari Tonbo", which was created to help represent the spirit and idea of what is practiced at Byakkokan.</p><p>With this mindset and approach to practice, we were fortunate to create strong relationships with other schools and styles in the martial arts community.</p>
