This femme fatale, known as VENUS to the Romans, from Greece&#x27;s Mount Olympus was considered irresistible in her beauty and ability to make all those she deemed fall utterly and completely in love. But who was this goddess from a strictly academic and historical point of view? What were her origins? How was she worshipped? How did she change in the perception of those of knew her over a period of time? We will not only discuss Aphrodite in myth and literature, but also from an archaeological standpoint investigating her presence and influence throughout the ancient Mediterranean, including her son Eros, also known as Cupid. Beginning on the island of Cyprus, we will explore her association as fertility goddess of the Ancient Near East, and move on from there. This will be both a fun and informative talk that will also open up discussions of how those in the ancient world viewed love in general!Dr. Rietveld is a professor at California State University, Fullerton, CA and Cal Poly, Pomona, CA of History, Anthropology and Religion. His specialties include the History of Christianity in the Early, Medieval and Byzantine periods, New Testament Studies and Greco-Roman religions. He received his PHD from Claremont School of Religion and is the author of two books.For Live Attendees:Ipso Facto is located at 517 N. Harbor Bl.
