Conversation with artist Gabriel Sosa on a new series of drawings made during his recent residency at Urbano Project.

*Please note that the date of this event has changed to Weds, July 28 (not Thu, July 29).Urbano's Winter 2021 Artist-in-Residence Gabriel Sosa presents a new body of drawings: graphite "rubbings" of letters and words found in public signage across his neighborhood in Boston, rearranged into textural compositions on paper and expressive phrases in Spanish and English. These dynamic works explore ideas of language, identity, memory, community, and our changing relationship to public space since the COVID-19 pandemic. Gabriel will be in conversation with Urbano staff about the drawings in the context of his larger public art practice, as well as his "Reading the Public Space" Urbano residency and project with teen artists, followed by an audience Q&A.This conversation will be reproduced and distilled as a bilingual (Spanish &amp; English) publication available in both digital and print formats.ABOUT THE ARTIST:<a href="https://www.gabrielsosa.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">GABRIEL SOSA</a> is a Cuban-American artist, educator, and linguist based in Boston. Through a multi-disciplinary practice that includes drawing, video, and public installation, he combines interests in translation, memory, and social justice to explore how the use of language subtly and consistently shapes our everyday experiences. His work has been shown at the Tufts University Art Galleries; Miami Poetry Festival; Centro Cultural Español, Miami; Fábrica de Arte Cubano, Havana; A R E A, Boston; The Current, Stowe, VT; Now + There, Boston and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco. Gabriel has organized exhibitions at Area Code Art Fair, the Nave Gallery in Somerville, and Haley House in Roxbury. He has also held residencies at Lugar a dudas, Cali, Colombia; Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, New Mexico; The Art &amp; Law Program, New York; Mass MoCA, North Adams, MA; and Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Santa Cruz, CA. Gabriel is a lecturer at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
