Workshop InformationDates: July 26-29Time: 1-4 PMLocation: Five Points Arts Center Drawing LabInstructor: Stephen MaineAges: 18+Workshop DescriptionA truly democratic art form, collage requires few technical skills, yet its conceptual reach is boundless. Collage employs spatial disruption as an organizing principle, its interplay of fragmentation and continuity accommodating and even celebrating contingencies of concept, process, and form. Suited to artists as well as graphic designers, this workshop considers collage as both a pictorial strategy and a vehicle for communication. Experimentation is encouraged in physical and digital modes, and special emphasis is given to the compositional behavior of color, the fluidity of iconographic meaning, and visual humor. The workshop will culminate in the production of a limited-edition digital portfolio containing one work by each participant. Required MaterialsSome collage raw materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to collect images, patterns, and color swatches from print media and household paper, and bring them to the first meeting. These will be pooled for communal use. Also, participants should bring a pad of white, medium-weight paper such as bristol (11 x 14 inches or larger), and a scissors or mat knife.NOTE: Workshop will be capped at 10 participants.Instructor BioStephen Maine is a painter, writer, and teacher who lives in West Cornwall, Connecticut. His solo exhibitions have been reviewed in ARTnews, Artcritical.com, the Brooklyn Rail, The New Criterion, Two Coats of Paint, and elsewhere. He has received support from New York Foundation for the Arts (2000) and Yaddo (2012), and is a longstanding member of American Abstract Artists and the International Association of Art Critics. Maine’s writing has appeared regularly in numerous publications; currently, he writes primarily for Hyperallergic.com. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts; Parsons The New School; Hartford Art School, University of Hartford; and Purchase College, SUNY, where he is Chair of the Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts program.
