A Community Conversation Series about DC Jail Food: Pt II

Impact Justice

Join us for part two of a series of community conversations about the state of jail food in DC, explored through firsthand accounts.

Co-hosted by Don’t Mute My Health & Impact JusticeThanks to the groundbreaking report Eating Behind Bars: Ending the Hidden Punishment of Food in Prison by Impact Justice, we are more aware of the inequities and troubling trends in prison food in America which impact more than 2.3 million incarcerated people nationwide. In short, prisons and jails are sites of food apartheid: people are prevented from accessing plentiful, nutrient-dense food that contributes to genuine health and well-being. During this community conversation, we will explore the state of jail food in DC through firsthand accounts of formerly incarcerated individuals. DC has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country, and on any given day, there are approximately 2,000 residents behind bars who rely on these facilities to eat. The impact of these meals on individuals' physical and emotional health and well-being cannot be overstated.During this second conversation we will continue to explore the state of DC jail food through firsthand accounts of formerly incarcerated residents. Speakers will dig into the short- and long-term impacts of consuming meals in jail on their physical and emotional health. We will also explore how jail food is situated within the larger DC food landscape and discuss how it reflects structural barriers to accessing nutritious food on the outside. In addition, we are collecting stories and information from those who have been incarcerated in DC about their experience eating in DC-based correctional facilities (Central Detention Facility and Correctional Treatment Facility). The goal of this survey is to gather testimonials on the experiences and impacts of eating in confinement in DC from the experts--those who have eaten the food themselves and their loved ones. The results will inform organizing work and prioritize efforts based on the top needs of those directly impacted.
