Reconnecting with Your Creative Self

Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC) is a community-based nonprofit organization serving the neighborhood of Hermosa located in Chicago’s northwest side. SRBCC is the longest-standing Puerto Rican cultural center in the city. Established in 1971, it was named in honor of Segundo Ruiz Belvis, the Puerto Rican founder of a secret abolitionist society that freed  children who had been enslaved during Spanish colonial rule. In that spirit, SRBCC realizes its mission to preserve and promote appreciation of the culture and arts of Puerto Rico and Latin America, with a focus on its African heritage.SRBCC evolved from a community arts project developed by Association House of Chicago and community activists of the Latin American Defense Organization (LADO). These organizations supported the economic and democratic rights of the Puerto Rican and Latino community of Chicago, focusing on the areas of civic involvement, citizenship, cultural identity, public education, health, safety and security, housing, and economic opportunity.

A 2- day workshop with Miguel Figueroa, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Art Papi.

<p>Art Papi is a book that chronicles contemporary Puerto Rican history through a contemporary art and subculture lens. It covers a crucial time in the island - from 2016 to 2022 - which saw Hurricane Maria, Ricky Renuncia and COVID-19 as well as the takeover of Promesa.</p><p>Join Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Miguel Figueroa for a presentation of the book as well a workshop where he will share creative writing techniques to unlock your creative potential and envision your dream project.</p>

Agenda

During the course of two sessions, we're going to explore a series of creative writing exercises that helped Miguel Figueroa unlock his creative self in order to create Art Papi.
 
These writing lessons explore our light and shadow sides and are supplemented with tai-chi, guided meditations and journaling.
 
Day 1 - Facing your Monsters
In this first day we'll explore our shadow self. Those people and situations that dimmed our light and are preventing us from becoming our true creative beings.
 
Schedule of first day:
10 minute tai-chi
15 minutes guided meditation
15 minutes of journaling
20 minutes to present first day’s topic
30 minutes - first exercise - write a letter to your bully and
20 minutes - second exercise -list all the people you are jealous of and why
10 minute break
30 minute - third exercise - write a letter to someone you hate
20 minutes - fourth exercise list all the ways you self sabotage yourself
10 minutes - goodbye/reflection

On the second day we’re going to have fun. We’ll be exploring our creative selves and finding new inspiration along the way. Participants are encouraged to bring one of their favorite childhood meals for a “picnic”.

30 minutes - second exercise - write about one of them
30 minute - third exercise - letters of gratitude - write a letter to a mentor

10 minutes - goodbye/reflection

Day 2 - Becoming Untouchable
