DC Master Gardener 2021 Continuing Education Series

Making a DifferenceThe Community is our Classroom. This signifies that our teaching is deeply rooted not only in solid theoretical foundations but also in the rich knowledge drawn from the community and region by the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES). We offer various research programs through the Water Resources Institute and the 143-acre Firebird Research Farm in Beltsville, MD. CAUSES offers community outreach programs for all ages. Our community education programs through our land-grant centers are: (1) The Center for Urban Agriculture & Gardening Education, (2) The Center for Urban Resilience, Innovation and Infrastructure which includes the Water Resources Research Institute, and (3) The Center for Nutrition Diet & Health which includes the Institute of Gerontology and Snap-Ed. In addition, the college provides innovative academic programs in urban architecture and community development, urban sustainability, health education, nursing, and nutrition and dietetics.

The winter is a wonderful time to reflect and plan your garden for the next year. In this class, we will discuss crop planning and seasonality, two tools you can use to ensure that you get your plants in the ground at the right time to experience optimal harvest.------------------------------------------------------------------Episode 6 – Composting for Soil Health: A Review of What, Why &amp; HowDate and Time: Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021, 6-7 pmInstructor: Brenda Platt, Institute for Local Self ResilienceDescription: In this workshop, master composter Brenda Platt will cover the benefits of composting, the basics of hot and worm composting (two very different methods!), home composting systems, troubleshooting, and how to use compost.Bio: Brenda Platt, Director, Composting for Community Initiative, Institute for Local Self-RelianceWashington, DC bplatt@ilsr.org ilsr.org/compostingBrenda Platt leads the Composting for Community Initiative at the national nonprofit Institute for Local Self-Reliance, where she has worked 35 years promoting zero waste, non-burn solutions to trash. Her current focus is advancing community-scale options such as composting at homes, community gardens, and farms. She emphasizes the power of compost to enhance soils, protect the climate, and foster healthy communities. She is a trained composter and trains others. In 2017, the US Composting Council awarded her its H. Clark Gregory Award for outstanding service to the composting industry through grassroots efforts.------------------------------------------------------------------Episode 7 - Tree communicationDate and time: Tuesday, August 17, 2021, 6 -7 pmInstructor: Richard Jones, Board Certified Master ArboristDescription: Trees not only can communicate with one another; they use fungi to do so. Ecologist Suzanne Simard discovered this revolutionary process twenty years ago when conventional wisdom saw trees as individual competitors. Research into the how&#x27;s and why&#x27;s continues today and reveals a much more complex and fascinating interwoven world.Bio: Richard Jones, Board Certified Master ArboristDespite having a degree in economics, Richard has ended up as a leader in the arboriculture world. His career in trees began as a landscaper in 2009. He became a certified arborist in 2012 while working for the Columbia Association and then a Board-Certified Master Arborist in 2018. Truly a distinction, there are fewer than 800 BCMA&#x27;s in the world.------------------------------------------------------------------Episode 8 - Prune with a Purpose: An Interactive DiscussionDate and time: Tuesday, August 31st from 6 - 7 pmInstructor: Jake HendeeDescription: Based upon the Smithsonian Let’s Talk Gardens series episode <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1FpR2vUdsc" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Prune with a Purpose: A Gardener’s Guide to Thinking Like an Arborist</a>, this talk will be a virtual, yet hands-on, session about trees (and shrub) pruning. The first half of this talk will review an arborist’s perspective about the most important points of taking your pruning to the next level. The second half will be an interactive discussion of several case studies in pruning, including case studies from participants. Bring a photo or two of your biggest pruning conundrums to screen-share with the group!Bio: Jake Hendee is the arborist at Smithsonian Gardens and a Board-Certified Master Arborist. As the arborist at the Smithsonian, Jake manages an official Smithsonian collection and one of the Smithsonian’s few living collections: the trees.
