What is the cost for the event?

The cost for the Crater Challenge 2025 is $50 per participant. This includes young hikers aged 12 and up. All funds raised will go directly to support the Meteor Crater Education Alliance's (MCEA) nonprofit cause, specifically providing scholarships for the Girls2Space STEM Camp.

When and where does the event take place?

The event takes place on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at the Meteor Crater. The hike begins at 9:00 AM.

How long is the hike?

Accepted Answer

The hike is approximately 2.5 miles long and takes around three hours to complete. It is a moderate, rocky trail, so participants should be in good physical condition.

How do I register for the event?

All participants must preregister by October 16, 2025, through Eventbrite. All participants must sign the Liability Release and Samples Collection Agreement at the Meteor Crater.

Is this a race?

No, this is not a race. The goal is to enjoy the hike around the marvel of the Meteor Crater while supporting the cause.

What should I bring?

Accepted Answer

Participants should bring water. A hydration pack like a CamelBak is highly recommended. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes and sun protection. Hikers are welcome to use hiking poles to help with stability on the uneven trail.

Can children participate in the hike?

Accepted Answer

Children 12 and up are welcome to participate, but they must be accompanied by an adult and be capable of hiking a moderate trail.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the event?

The event will proceed in most weather conditions. However, in the case of rain or high winds, we will notify participants of any changes or cancellations via email.

Will there be restrooms available?

Accepted Answer

Yes, restrooms will be available at the start and end of the hike. There will also be a portable toilet at the midpoint of the hike.

How will the funds raised be used?

All funds raised will go directly to scholarships for the Girls2Space STEM Camp, hosted by the Meteor Crater Education Alliance (MCEA). The MCEA is a 501c3 non-profit education organization that aims to empower students to explore science, engineering, and STEM career exploration.

What happens if I am unable to attend the Crater Challenge after I registered?

We will not be able to issue a refund, but your contribution will benefit deserving students and will be tax deductible.
