Day One, Sept 12

Dr. Chad Page will discuss current trends in the sheep industry and share ongoing research projects at Utah State University.

Lunch & Welcome Address

Dr. Stephan Wildeus of Virginia State University will provide a historical review of his decades of research with St. Croix sheep and discuss current projects.

Review of St. Croix Research, Past and Present

Dr. Scott Bowdridge of West Virginia University will discuss what his research has revealed about the immune function and parasite resistance in sheep, using St. Croix sheep as a model.

St. Croix Sheep as a Model for Immune Function and Parasite Resistance

Dr. Rios will discuss the University of the Virgin Islands’ St. Croix sheep flock, other island flocks, current or planned research projects involving the breed, and the challenges faced in that work.

St. Croix White Hair Sheep and the Future of Sheep Production

Join us at the celebratory banquet where we will watch a video interview with Dr. Warren Foote, and then hear from research universities with flocks of St. Croix sheep, including Virginia State University, West Virginia University, Utah State University, and the University of the Virgin Islands. Topics will include history of the breed, research from the past and present, and securing the future of the breed in the United States sheep industry.

Dr. Ranglock will discuss how research about coyotes  and other predators can inform producers when developing predator management plans.

Learn about using NSIP to improve selected traits in your flock. Dr. Weaver will use real-world data from different breeds to illustrate.

National Sheep Improvement Program-A Tool for Seedstock & Commercial Producers

Join Dr. Welch and or Dr. Stonecipher from the USDA Poisonous Plant Research Laboratory to learn about plants that are toxic to sheep.
