Overview

Genealogy Techniques examines different strategies and tools for effective genealogy research.

Co-sponsored by Santa Clara County Historical and Genealogy Society and Santa Clara City Library, Genealogy Techniques examines different strategies and tools for effective genealogy. Each class, we do a deep dive into a one topic to learn how to add this tool or process into our personal genealogy toolbox. This is not a beginner course, but genealogists of all levels should find something in each session that will help advance their research. This class is led by Nancy Moffett.

April 8, 2026 - Immigration & Naturalization in the US - Immigration and naturalization records are crucial for genealogy, providing details about an ancestor's arrival and the legal process of becoming a citizen. This class will cover the various types of records, such as passenger lists, declarations of intention, and petitions for naturalization, explaining where to find them and how to interpret the valuable personal and geographical information they contain.

June 10, 2026 - Essential Tech and Tools for Genealogists - This class will focus on practical, essential technology tools that streamline and enhance genealogical research. We will cover non-genealogy tools such as utilizing dual monitors, password managers, backup tools, snipping tools, and scanners as well as genealogy specific tools such as databases and photo tools.

October 14, 2026 - Newspaper Research in the US - Discover the wealth of genealogical information hidden in newspapers, offering details on births, deaths, marriages, and social events not found elsewhere. This class will guide students through effective search strategies across both free and paid subscription services.

We are now running these meetings both in-person and on Zoom. Registration is required:
