2021 Lewis MacAdams Prize  Free Public Workshop - "Voices of the River"

Founded in 2014, LA River Public Art Project (LARPAP) combines advocacy, public policy, and the arts to re-present the river we share. LARPAP believes that dynamic public art is the ideal platform for focusing public attention to the Los Angeles River. Together, we can right the environmental wrongs that have befallen the river and reclaim it for creative and community-led projects. Through planning, conversation, and art-driven engagement, we work to honor the founding communities of this historic landscape, re-establish vibrancy to neglected areas, and support the vibrant communities the river flows through.

To explore and encourage responses to this year’s theme, we are offering a free ZOOM workshop, “Voices of the River”

On April 27th, the LA River Public Art Project launched the second annual Lewis MacAdams Prize in an open call for site-specific, public art proposals with the theme Represent the River: Word &amp; Image. Two prizes are offered: a Grand Prize of $500, and an Emerging Artist Prize of $150 for entrants 18 years old and younger.To explore and encourage responses to this year’s theme, we are offering a free ZOOM workshop, “Voices of the River,” led by writers Rex Weiner and Andrea Ohlsen-Esparza; and the 2020 prize winners, artists Anooshey Rahim and Graham Laird Prentice. This engaging workshop will guide you through activities that spark curiosity and explore ways to express the geographies and communities of the river, feel the flow of the river’s historical past, see its vast contrasts of terrain, and find points of interest, curiosity and identity. Does the river speak to you? Are you a voice for the river? How do you see it and how will you say it?Who should attend: Youth and emerging writers and artists 10 to 18 years old are especially encouraged to attend, whether or not you plan to enter the competition.
