Decolonizing Healthcare is the culmination of my life’s work and experience. I had no idea 25 years ago when sitting in hospitals with my dad, and then continuing to navigate hospitals, clinics, rehabs, and nursing homes with him over the next 14 years, that I would end up doing this. But I should have. This July will mark the 25th anniversary of my father's first brain surgery. A week before the surgery, his neurosurgeon told us that he’d done a complete medical history investigation of my father to determine the source of the tumor and he told us that in his medical opinion he believed that experimental medical radiation therapy administered to my fathers head when he was a 9-year-old child and my grandmother took him into a Jim Crow clinic for help. This was in his medical records unhidden, but this was 1949, long before the days of informed consent. This set me on a path of self-discovery. I began relearning history from the Black and Indigenous lens. And I also learned that most of the experimentation done on Black people, while not in history books, is documented in medical records because white society didn’t even deem it as wrong, as we weren’t considered human. This is deeply ingrained and doesn’t just go away and plays out in a myriad of subtle ways in today’s society because the US has never acknowledged, reconciled, and repaired its last. I watched my father suffer needlessly in the healthcare system while he slowly died over 14 years, as a Black, poor, fat man, he was treated like shit, while I was obsessively researching history, learning just how sick and racist all the foundations of this nation are. It’s why I go so hard. This is also why I ended up in natural medicine and why I will never ever stop fighting to create a new healthcare paradigm that serves everyone that is safe, holistic, integrative, and equitable. This workshop is intended to get practitioners to do the work within themselves and in turn in their professional communities to create the healthcare system we all envision. This isn’t your typical DEI or anti-racism training. You will be given the straight truth and a lot of your thinking will be challenged. This workshop is information dense, moves fast and I highly encourage you to take notes as there will not be a recording or powerpoint available, the class is offered live only.
