The Herb Lubalin Lecture Series

The Herb Lubalin Lecture Series is a part of Type@Cooper which is open to the public for free. The lectures thematically follow the overall curriculum of the program, offering students a deeper insight into specific and relevant topics.

Ornaments and patterns are all around us, and there are many approaches to this subject, with endless connections. However, in this workshop, we will focus on designing ornaments that can be used to generate patterns, based on typographic knowledge and settings. We will start from the basics, so anyone who is interested in type ornaments, regardless of their skills, experience or expertise can join. During these three days, we will look into how type ornaments work, rules and possibilities of combinations, references, and tools, and more importantly, get our hands busy designing ornaments. The classes will involve presentations, group discussions, one on one feedback, and sketching time! You will walk out with your own collection of patterns generated from your own ornament(s).Required Materials<ul><li>Mac computer with a reliable internet connection</li><li>Zoom and Drawbot app recommended</li><li>Sketching materials: Grid paper, Copy paper, pencil, black marker</li><li>Scanner or mobile phone camera</li></ul>Marina Chaccur is a designer based in The Hague, where she works part-time for Type Network, teaches type design at KABK, and also works at her studio Marina Chaccur Designs, focusing on residential interior design projects. She holds a degree in Industrial Design from Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, an MA in Graphic Design from the London College of Communication, and an MA in Type and Media from the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten. Marina has been involved in conferences, lectures, workshops, and exhibitions worldwide, also having served as a board member for Association Typographique Internationale.
