Lettering for Graphic Designers with Ying Chang

A design festival for people who use type.

Typographics Festival

This class is limited to 14 students. This class meets on Mondays and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM Eastern Time.

As the hype on type took off, interest in hand-lettering within the world of graphic design and advertising has increased. Through her own experience working in various global agencies, Ying tailors this course to support her fellow type-loving designers and art directors in upping their type game by acquiring a new skill set in hand lettering. With a series of lectures, instructional demonstrations, exercises, and one-on-one feedback, participants will steadily train their critical eye and gain the ability to create fresh looks in their future personal and professional projects.With an emphasis on hand-lettering in branding and advertising through a variety of practices, students will develop a project of their own. We will start with the study of well-crafted letterforms, move onto drawing sans serif and modern letters, and then dive deeper into the variables—going beyond choosing and arranging existing fonts to build unique design solutions by hand. The series will end with a lesson on digitizing with Bézier curves so students will be well equipped with the knowledge, drawing skill, and sharp eyes to stand out in the creative fields.All skill level in lettering is welcomed. Basic knowledge in type, Adobe software is encouraged.Required Materials<ul><li>Pencil</li><li>Eraser</li><li>Ruler</li><li>Pad of marker paper or tracing paper (or any paper that you can see what’s underneath) - No smaller than A4/Letter size.</li><li>OPTIONAL: Procreate on iPad (Students with proficiency in the program are welcomed on iPad for their exercises. There will be no lesson on Procreate)</li><li>Computer and a stable internet connection</li><li>Zoom app recommended</li></ul><a href="https://yinglish.net" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ying Chang</a> is a letterer, designer, and art director based in NYC. Growing up in Taiwan, she was deeply influenced by her mother, a calligrapher, and father, a painter. Ying followed in her parents' footsteps and attended the National Taiwan University of Arts. After gaining her bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design, Ying bought a one-way-ticket to New York to further her study at the Pratt Institute and finished with a master’s degree in Communication Design. She was immediately hooked upon taking her first calligraphy class and when was encouraged to study at the Type@Cooper Extended Program her true passion for lettering came into focus. Since then she has been creating logotypes and lettering works for a variety of brands and publications while continuing to contribute her design skill to the world of advertising where she has produced award-winning campaigns.
