Stories of Art & Resistance:  LGBTQ Art and Activism

We are the education department of Brooklyn Public Library's Center for Brooklyn History. Our signature partnership program offers classes rare access to original archival materials while completing a customized, standards-based project. Center for Brooklyn History Education

Two day event that explores the ways LGBTQ artists and activists have resisted marginalization by organizing and creating.

NOTE: This is a two day event. Tickets options are available for individual sessions or to attend both days. Financial assistance is available; email us at connections@bklynlibrary.org to learn more.During Pride Month 2021, join us online for a two-part professional development workshop in conjunction with Brooklyn Museum, and explore how LGBTQ+ communities have challenged the status quo and presented radical visions of queer liberation through art and activism. In the first session on June 8th, 5-6:30 PM, join a panel discussion on the evolving nature of queer organizing and resistance in New York and beyond with Lola Flash—a photographer, educator, and member of ACT-UP during the height of the AIDS epidemic—and poet and actor Timothy DuWhite, moderated by performance artist Una Aya Osato. They discuss the impact of HIV/AIDS on LGBTQ+ communities and the role of artists in mobilizing communities to raise awareness, combat stigma, and advocate for equitable care. In the second workshop, on June 9th, 5-6:30 PM, educators from the Center for Brooklyn History and Brooklyn Museum share resources and strategies to support LGBTQ-inclusive curricula and pedagogy.Each session is eligible for 1.5 CTLE credits, with a maximum of 3 CTLE credits for interested participants who attend both sessions.
