About this EventAs designers and researchers, how can we build power and accountability in our organizations when “the community” we serve is distant or absent in our day-to-day work?This 90-minute workshop is for designers and researchers to try figuring this out through experiential learning.What to expect in this workshop:<ul><li>In small groups, we will review and work scenarios drawn from real-life stories.</li><li>Our objective with each scenario is to generate strategies that match our values.</li><li>Participants will leave with strategies and tactics they can use in their workplaces, organizations, and communities. </li><li>We will also make stronger connections to a community of practice that can support us going forward, including inviting you to try facilitating this workshop on your own!</li></ul>Why we're hosting this workshop, and what comes next:This workshop grew out of a long conversation among designers and researchers struggling to bring justice, equity, and power into our work. This workshop is our way of making progress on applying the Design Justice Principles, by engaging with a mix of people with different professional experiences and struggles. After this workshop, we will also develop a resource for broader use and participants will be credited if they wish for contributing to make it possible. We will also send an invitation for you to facilitate a version of this workshop with your community and network.Accessibility and Privacy:We want to ensure the workshop is as accessible as possible. We will have note takers throughout, and we will provide the workshop overview/facilitation guide in advance. If you have specific access needs, please let us know when you register and we will do our best to accommodate them. You can also message us on the #principlesatwork channel on the Design Justice Network Slack.We will be using Zoom, a video conferencing tool. We follow the <a href="https://palantetech.coop/zoomboming-self-defense/tech-guide" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom security guidelines</a> of our friends at <a href="https://palantetech.coop" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Palante Tech Cooperative</a>.For the majority of the workshop you will be in small breakout sessions working with others through discussion and Google Docs to collaborate in writing. We suggest using a laptop or desktop computer to join the session because of the length and use of Google Docs service for note taking. We will not share your contact details with anyone and we will not use them to contact you directly–all of our communication to you will be done through Eventbrite.
