In a world where exploration, resilience and compassion have never been more vital, Carry the Flame: The Remarkable Story of the Canadian Outward Bound Wilderness School takes readers on an inspiring journey through the rugged landscapes and transformative experiences that define this iconic institution. Packed with candid and deeply personal stories, rich history, and unforgettable moments, the book provides a rare glimpse into how the school has shaped generations of leaders, adventurers, and changemakers. More than just an essay collection, Carry the Flame serves as a testament to the enduring human spirit and the power of nature to transform lives.

“This book is a celebration of life . . . a portrait of an educational enclave that was years ahead of its time by embracing and embodying Kurt Hahn’s broad philosophical notions about what it means to be a complete human being.”— James Raffan, explorer, educator, and author of Circling the Midnight Sun, Deep Waters, and Ice Walker

Charles Luckmann has taught at four Outward Bound Schools, The Bush School in Seattle, and Skagit Valley College. He has coordinated natural history seminars for North Cascades Institute and served as editor for The Journal of Experiential Education. He's written several books, including X Stories, Voices along the Skagit, and Bellingham Poems.

North Cascades Institute envisions healthy Northwest ecosystems where all communities and species thrive. Our mission is to inspire environmental stewardship through transformative learning experiences in nature. Since 1986, we have helped connect people, nature and community through the hands-on study of the natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest.
