A Special Women's Music History: A Celebration of the Betsy York Collection

The June L.  Mazer Archivesis the largest major archive on the West Coast dedicated to preserving and promoting lesbian and feminist history and culture. By creating a safe place for women to explore the richness of lesbian history, perhaps adding to it themselves, we are paving the way for future generations to understand more fully their own identity and history and help maintain this vital link to their own past.The mission of the Mazer Archives is to collect, preserve and make accessible lesbian, feminist and women’s queer history as a means of providing a link among all generations of lesbians; to develop social activities, educational events, opportunities and programs that promote historical awareness; and to provide research and resource facilities.**The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives is a grass roots archive founded in 1981 in Oakland, California as the "West Coast Lesbian Collections". It is one of the largest archives in the world dedicated to collecting protecting and preserving lesbian and feminist women's history. 1985 the Archives moved to Southern California with the help of the Connexxus Women's Center. It moved into the home of June Mazer and her partner Bunny Mac Culloch in Altadena, California. June died from cancer in 1987. Bunny changed the name to the June L Mazer Lesbian Archives and continued to run the Archives with the help of volunteers. In 1989 the Archive was moved from Altadena into the Werle Building in West Hollywood with the help of Jodi Curlee, Lauren Jardine and Del Martinez of Connexxus/Centro de Mujeres, Jean Conger and the Gay and Lesbian Task Force The Archives has been run strictly by volunteers for most of its thirty-seven years and has continued on supported by private donors and the City of West Hollywood. The Archives has created an outreach and collection-building partnership with the UCLA Libraries.

Mazer Lesbian Archives

The Mazer showcases another collection, this time it's the collection of Betsy York, a Women's Music Producer and Distributor.

<p>Join us while we share the Betsy York Collection with Betsy York herself,  Sandy Ramsey, and Bonnie Morris.  Betsy York distributed music for numerous music labels in New England and Southern California, Sandy Ramsey has worked in the women&#x27;s music industry for decades, and Bonnie Morris is the archivist of Olivia Records and a lecturer at UC Berkeley.  Join us and find out what it was like to distribute this music for Betsy York and how she travelled Coast to Coast doing it! </p>
