In our modern world, the ‘glitch’ can be found everywhere.

The idea of the ‘glitch’ as art is ripe with history that has involved experimentation in a myriad of forms. Meanwhile, the proliferation of new tools and frameworks to aid in visual coding on the web has become easier than ever, opening the doors for creatives to explore the space of font structures and layouts in new and radical ways. This area of experimentation seems ripe for creatives wanting to explore the concepts of glitch aesthetics and data bending. What if a letterform could be affected by sound? What happens when you manipulate the raw components of a font? What new ideas can we gain from breaking away from pixel-perfect intentionality?P5.js will be the main programming library for the course, a beginner-friendly Javascript framework. Students who are new to programming are welcome. Techniques covered in this course will include building visual compositions with code, manipulating pixel and vector data, and implementing them in real-time applications on the browser.During the course of four evenings, there will be weekly lectures and demonstrations on different algorithmic concepts. Students will be expected to complete weekly assignments to solidify their understanding and create typographic projects of a computational nature. Required Materials:<ul><li>Access to a laptop computer (or equivalent)</li><li>Reliable internet connection</li></ul><a href="http://www.lynneyun.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lynne Yun</a> is a NYC-based type designer and educator who specializes in typography, hand lettering, and calligraphy. She is a partner at <a href="https://spacetypecontinuum.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Space Type Continuum</a>, a Brooklyn based type studio that operates at the intersection of type, design, and technology. Lynne was previously a full time type designer at Monotype, and served on the board of AIGA NY and Society of Scribes. Prior to working at Monotype, Lynne held positions as a graphic designer at Apple Inc., Publicis, and Deutsch.  She holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, a postgraduate certificate in typeface design from the Type@Cooper Extended Program. In pursuit of technology in relation to letterforms, she attended the School for Poetic Computation residency program obtained a Masters degree from ITP at New York University. Her work has been recognized by organizations such as AIGA, Type Directors Club and the Art Directors Club.<a href="http://kyeh.me/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Kevin Yeh </a>is a partner at <a href="https://spacetypecontinuum.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Space Type Continuum</a>, a Brooklyn based type studio that operates at the intersection of type, design, and technology. Kevin has a background in computer vision, graphics and robotic learning, and holds an MS in computer science and film studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He also works at Nava PBC, where he partners with government agencies to build simple and reliable public digital services. Prior to Nava, he supported artists and creatives as an engineer at Kickstarter, acted as director of innovation for HackTX, and participated in the hackNY residential fellowship as a student and mentor.As a technologist, his work reflects broad and varied interests to imagine, reconstruct, and relate to the natural world through the lenses of augmented reality, computer animation, and mobile hardware. By wrangling complex machinations and building open and accessible tools, he hopes to empower others to experiment with and leverage technology within their own communities to create something new.
