On June 2, 1875, a group of art students had the radical idea to create their own art school—one designed for and run byindependent artists.These students broke away from theNational Academy of Design and started the Art Students League of New York—an atelier-style institution whereanyone with an interest in art education can learn traditional fine art technique.Withmore than 100 classes taught in-studio and online, League students make art from day one. League artistslearn by doing, under the guidance of professional artist instructors. Free from a set curriculum and restrictive grading system, League students can focus on making art.There are no applications or prerequisites. A tradition that’s more than a century old; the Art Students League of New York’s annual Instructor Salon is an exhibition of work by current League instructors. This year’s salon, which features nearly 100 accomplished artists, reflects the broad range of styles and subjects taught at the League in an exemplary display of our community’s creative powers. Highlights include new work by Shijia Chen, Marc Dennis, Paula De Luccia, Ronnie Landfield, Pat Lipsky, James Little, Mary Beth McKenzie, Sharon Sprung, and Jason Yarmosky, among many others.The Art Students League of New York was founded in 1875 by a small group of tenacious artists who broke off from the National Academy of Design. That independent spirit remains at the League today, where students pursue their work unconstrained by dogma, politics, or burdensome tuition. The League educates students in the language and process of making art in an environment where anyone who wishes to pursue arts education can realize their full potential. The League fulfills this mission by offering affordable, high-quality education and instruction in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and assemblage.
