Continuing our series exploring the vistas, views, and landscape of the Albany region during the 18th-19th century, the Albany County Historical Association is pleased to present Dr. Myra Armstead, Professor of Historical Studies at Bard College. Dr. Armstead, author of Freedom&#x27;s Gardener: James F. Brown, Horticulture, and the Hudson Valley in Antebellum America, presents her current research exploring the lives of enslaved persons in the upper Hudson Valley, and the role enslaved persons had in shaping and creating landscapes. She will present case studies from the Schuyler family&#x27;s estate in Saratoga. The Ten Broeck and Schuyler families had many business, family, and personal connections, as did the enslaved and free persons of color who helped shape and manage the landscapes and living spaces which are preserved for visitors today.Free admission is for current ACHA members. Please help us continue programs like this one by donating or joining as a member of the ACHA.About the presenter: Myra Young Armstead is the Lyford Paterson Edwards and Helen Gray Edwards Professor of Historical Studies at Bard College and Vice President for Academic Inclusive Excellence. She received her doctorate in History from the University of Chicago where she interned under the late Dr. John Hope Franklin and concentrated in three fields—U.S. urban history, U.S. diplomatic history, and African colonial history. She holds a Masters in International Relations with a concentration in African Affairs, and a Bachelors from Cornell University where she majored in Government.	Professor Armstead’s book publications include ‘Lord, Please Don’t Take Me in August’: African Americans in Newport and Saratoga Springs, 1870 - 1930 (University of Illinois, 1999); Mighty Change, Tall Within: Black Identity in the Hudson Valley (SUNY Press, 2003); and Freedom’s Gardener: James F. Brown, Horticulture, and the Hudson Valley in Antebellum America (NYU Press, 2012). Currently, she is completing two research projects --a book-length study of cultural reforms during the Progressive Era, and a book on slavery and slaveholding at Schuyler Mansion in Saratoga National Park. In 2014-2015, she received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship to undertake research at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for the Progressive Era project. She has a third project—a study of racialized class divisions and cross-class connections regarding economic issues among evangelical Protestants in North America. Her initial study of economics and religion for this study was supported by a three-year grant from the Louisville Institute, 2015-2018. At Bard, Professor Armstead has taught broadly in U.S. history with a concentration in nineteenth century social and cultural history.
