Most often, our experience has been in established businesses with established customers, products, processes, and operations. However, in today’s work of entrepreneurships, “transformations,” “innovations,” and “disruptions,” we may also have the opportunity to consider whether business architecture can bring value in these “different contexts.” Specifically, we must critically ask the question should architecture be practiced in situations where there are rapid changes, great uncertainties, evolving value propositions, rapid product iterations, and emerging business models.Even though we have witnessed the value of architecture in established businesses, we must ask ourselves whether there is enough value to be gained by bringing architecture practices into these situations of significant ambiguity. At the risk of otherwise being the parabolic hammer that sees everything as a nail, we must also ask ourselves when business architecture is not a good fit.Such a question may be most important in the context of innovation and startups. As Eric Ries points out in his book, The Lean Startup, the defining characteristic is “...creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty.” More specifically, it is the uncertainty of a new business &amp; organization (a startup), a new product, or the uncertainties in results with a transformation. In this context, we cannot directly reference the experience and wisdom of others, as by definition we are doing something new and unique. Accordingly, It is also in this context that we must critically and objectively ask the question of whether business architecture should play a role.Join Garrett Gleason as he explores this question and invites discussion. He will facilitate the discussion and share an emerging perspective based on his experience working in Fortune 500 Companies, working on transformation &amp; innovation initiatives, and now working in a startup firm.
