Resting Our Way Home: A Spiritual Retreat for Black Mothers

This is a spiritual retreat, created for Black mothers to engage in radical self care in the form of rest.

Susan Taylor For generations, black women have been told, trained, and taught to “hang in there”, “stick it out”, and “keep on keeping on.” While these ways of thinking have served some aspects of our lives, they've also placed undue burdens on us and fostered a narrative that prevents us from seeing rest as a value and stops us from prioritizing self care. When unchecked and unexamined, this mentality can be particularly harmful, causing negative affects on our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well-being. As black women brave triple pandemics of racism, sexism, and COVID, we jeopardize our ability to show up for ourselves and our communities when we operate from a place of depletion and exhaustion. And as mothers, these messages run an even greater assault on our wellbeing, as we feel the real pressures to place the needs of our children/family ahead of our own and at times, neglecting our needs all together. The truth is that when we prioritize our wellbeing and fill our own cups, we are able to pour more freely into the lives of others. By reclaiming our humanity and worth, Black women are beginning to tap into revolutionary expressions of radical self-love that are centered in God, rest, and community. It is time for us to shift intergenerational traumas we’ve inherited, and listen to our soul’s whisperings to come home and rest. 

Resting Our Way Home is a 2-hour spiritual retreat specifically for black mothers. It is our hope that this space will allow for intergenerational dialogue amongst mothers, grandmothers, aunts, family friends, where we intentionally and lovingly interrogate the narratives we hold and experience rest as a form of liberation. Using a blend of spiritual tools, informed knowledge, and experiential exercises, Drs. Tameka and Kawami will guide us on a beautiful journey to deepen our understanding of rest as radical self-love and freedom. The hope is that you will expand your understanding of rest and walk away with practical tools to keep you encouraged on your journey ahead. 

In light of the political climate and the individual and collective need for care, this session is designed specifically for black women. This allows us to create the intimate and psychologically safe space necessary to truly nurture the hearts, minds, and bodies of those present.
