A workshop to learn & practice skills for having more respectful & productive political conversations with people on the "other side."

In our current polarized political environment, many people avoid or dread political conversations with friends or family members whose politics differ from their own. They worry that any attempts at political discussions will devolve into arguments and acrimony and result in hurt feelings or anger. Braver Angels&#x27; workshop on Skills for Bridging the Divide teaches skills for having respectful conversations that clarify differences, search for common ground, and affirm the importance of the relationship. They also give participants a safe environment to practice those skills. After a brief introduction and a discussion about what can go wrong in political discussions, participants in a skills workshop can expect to learn the following:<ul><li>Tone setting skills</li><li>Listening skills</li><li>Speaking skills</li><li>Handling difficult moments</li></ul>For more information about Braver Angels and this workshop,<a href="https://braverangels.org/what-we-do/skills-bridging-divide/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> </a><a href="https://braverangels.org/what-we-do/skills-bridging-divide/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">click here</a>.<h2>Participant Expectations​</h2>By registering for this session it is expected you will:<ol><li>Respond to a pre-session survey that you will receive on Monday, April 19</li><li>Complete the eLearning course that constitutes Part 1 of this 2-part workshop (link to be emailed to you)</li><li>Fully participate in the session from 12pm-2pm on Wednesday, May 12</li><li>Respond to a post-session survey that you will receive on Wednesday, May 12</li></ol>Participation in this session costs $12. This covers the session registration fee and provides a 1-year membership with Braver Angels, which includes access to exclusive events, all eLearning courses and the ability to join a local alliance. Note: If the registration fee presents a financial hardship, please reach out to Victoria Solomon, Community Resource Development Educator with UW-Madison Division of Extension Green County (victoria.solomon@wisc.edu or 608-328-9440) to apply for a $12 scholarship. In this registration process you will be asked to self-identify as leaning red (politically conservative) or leaning blue (politically liberal). This information will be used to connect you with a breakout room partner with a similar political leaning. If you do not have a political leaning we ask that you choose one for the purposes of the skills practice.
