Introduction to Brush Calligraphy

Thirty years ago Amy's calligraphy journey started in a fourth grade program at her elementary school. Her teacher (who was not a calligrapher) introduced the students to a basic broad-edge pen using an Italic script. After a 20 year break (while studying architecture and graphic design) she picked up a pointed pen in 2013 and has been studying calligraphy ever since. Amy is a member of the International Association for Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) and the Greater Cincinnati Calligrapher’s Guild. Amy is a certified instructor of The American Cursive Handwriting System created by Master Penman Michael Sull. She also homeschools her four sons and resides in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Have fun learning the basics of brush pen calligraphy in this 3 hour in-person workshop

The Barn

This will be a fun, interactive, hands-on workshop in brush-marker calligraphy. During the three-hour long class, students will:<ul><li>explore different types of markers </li><li>learn how to properly hold your pen</li><li>gain an understanding of guideline terminology</li><li>practice basic strokes</li><li>try out a "modern" calligraphy alphabet</li><li>practice a sign-painting inspired alphabet</li><li>learn how to achieve that modern “bouncy” calligraphy look</li><li>explore different applications for this fun, playful medium</li><li>walk away with an envelope addressed in their own brush calligraphy</li></ul>All supplies for this workshop will be provided.The class is designed for adults, but kids 13 and older are welcome with adult supervision. Amy will be teaching towards beginners - no prior experience necessary. If you do have some lettering experience, you will also benefit from the techniques taught in this class.All supplies will be providedWhen: Sunday, April 25 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm EST with a 15 minute break at the half-way point. Please take into consideration your personal health, pre-existing conditions, and tolerance for risk before attending classes or exhibits at The Barn. Please do not come to the Barn if you are exhibiting any COVID-related symptoms.
