A writing workshop to find clarity in tumultuous times.

In these chaotic times, we can find ourselves drowning in words. Here is a way to find some clarity.This workshop is for writers and those who consider themselves non-writers. It is for anyone who has a lot of words within them and wants to reveal their essence. You will have time to free-form write on a topic of your desire, then whittle it down into a moderately-sized poem. Then we will whittle it down again. And then again. And you will see the magic happen. Sometimes the words come out so fast we don’t even know the essence of what we are writing.In this process of what I call a “reduction poem,” you will have the liberty to free-form write and then pare it away to find the essence.This workshop is for anyone who wants to find the essence of their words and heart space within. What’s really going on inside? What really wants to come out? We will alternate between having private time for writing, sharing in small groups, and then in large group. There will also be the option to separate into breakout groups of People of Color and non-People of Color.We will be digging into the questions:How has your heart broken?How have you grown? Have you encountered strange joys?What has made you shut down?What has made you come alive?As Covid and the deep turbulence of these times affect people of all ages, this writing workshop is open to people of all ages. Of course, that includes youth! Especially youth.It is intergenerational and open to all. Suggested donation: $50/adult, $20/youth. No one will be turned away, give what you can. Come to write, come to heal.Feel free to have a writing friend, a family member, or a dear one come with you; I am happy to match you up in a small group - maybe just the pair of you, if you desire - so you can be with them. Again, this is a time to tend to the heart, and so if you are writing with people who understand your heart, the healing and opening can deepen even more.About the teacher, Crystal Chan: Crystal is a published author for youth (Simon &amp; Schuster): Her debut novel, BIRD, was published in nine countries, and her second novel, ALL THAT I CAN FIX, has received multiple starred reviews. She has presented for audiences ranging from 10-600, with a special heart for youth. These days, she is actively crafting and hosting online self-care retreats to help people from all walks of life walk as best as they can in these turbulent times.
