CHECKING IN: An SMCM Community Based Play About Healing

The final Zoom performance of the TFMS Spring 2021 season, this play was written by  SMCM students in collaboration with the community.

Please note: the performance start time is 2:00 pm, but you should arrive in the Zoom waiting room at least 10 minutes early. The performance should finish shortly after 4:00 pm, but we will keep the Zoom room open for discussion after the performance if you would like to stay and talk.In a time very much like Fall 2020, a group of people is forced into lockdown in a medical waiting room. To keep themselves occupied they share stories about their lives. As they transform the waiting room into a place for creativity and community, the group discovers that while there is no single path to healing that works for everyone, the acts of storytelling and listening have power. &quot;Checking In&quot; is the outcome of a Fall 2020 course entitled Devising a Community Based Play, and was written by students based on interviews with members of the local community on the subjects of race, gender and healing. The play will be recorded and played for a live Zoom audience. The first 10 people who register for tickets for each performance will receive a &quot;care package&quot; - to be picked up on campus or sent through the mail - of items to make the Zoom performance an interactive experience. CONTENT WARNING: THIS PLAY CONTAINS MENTIONS OF OVERT AND SYSTEMIC RACISM AND RACIST VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND SUICIDAL THOUGHTS.
