Gender Bias in the Media

VTDigger is a statewide, online news organization that publishes in-depth news on matters of public interest.  It reaches 700,000 individual readers a month and posts daily news stories about state government, politics, healthcare, business, criminal justice, energy and the environment. VTDigger is partnering with the Vermont Has Her Back initiative to advance the conversation about gender bias in the media.

In January, leaders from Vermont’s political, business and nonprofit sectors signed an <a href="https://vtdigger.org/2021/01/25/letter-to-vermont-journalists-calls-for-an-end-to-gender-bias-in-the-media/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">open letter</a> from Vermont Has Her Back calling on the state’s press corps to reflect on the way women in politics are covered and to address gender bias in journalism. VTDigger and Vermont Has Her Back have designed this event together as part of an ongoing effort to grapple with questions around diversity, representation and equity in Vermont’s news media. Acclaimed feminist author Rebecca Traister will give a keynote address followed by a panel moderated by Vermont Public Radio’s <a href="https://www.vpr.org/people/jane-lindholm#stream/0" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jane Lindholm</a>. The panel will feature <a href="https://vtdigger.org/author/anne-galloway/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anne Galloway</a>, founder and executive director of VTDigger; <a href="https://www.sevendaysvt.com/author/candace-page" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Candace Page</a>, editor at Seven Days; <a href="https://www.vpr.org/people/sarah-ashworth#stream/0" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sarah Ashworth</a>, VPR’s vice president of news; <a href="https://spectrumnews1.com/ky/louisville/about-us/2019/05/30/eva-mckend" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Eva McKend</a>, congressional correspondent for Spectrum News and former anchor for WCAX; and <a href="https://twitter.com/natsilvervt?lang=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Natalie Silver</a>, co-author of Vermont Has Her Back. REBECCA TRAISTER is a writer at large for New York magazine. A National Magazine Award winner, she has written about women in politics, media, and entertainment from a feminist perspective for The New Republic and Salon and has also contributed to The Nation, The New York Observer, The New York Times and The Washington Post. She is the author of two New York Times best-sellers, <a href="https://www.phoenixbooks.biz/book/9781501181818" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Good and Mad</a> and <a href="https://www.phoenixbooks.biz/book/9781476716572" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">All the Single Ladies</a>, as well as the award-winning book <a href="https://www.phoenixbooks.biz/book/9781439150290" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Big Girls Don’t Cry</a>. She lives in New York with her family. Traister&#x27;s keynote speech will focus on on how women&#x27;s rage--and disruption to power structures--are received in media and politics.This event will be held live over zoom in a webinar format and livestreamed on the <a href="https://vtdigger.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">VTDigger homepage</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/VTDigger/videos?view=2&amp;live_view=502" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">YouTube channel</a>. Attendees are strongly encouraged to RSVP via eventbrite.
