Join Alicia as she presents the many facets of soil restoration, small-scale sustainable practices, and solutions depleted farmland.

My name is Alicia, and I am a fourth year undergraduate at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. I am nearly finished with my degree in Environmental Science, which I have used to concentrate on sustainability and soil science. Growing up in a small town in rural Indiana, I received an extensive agricultural education throughout high school, only to realize how destructive and unsustainable traditional farming practices really were.I came to Wakeman Town Farm with a special interest in their newest garden, which has struggled due to poor soil for quite a few years. Only recently reclaimed as a part of the farm, the land has suffered a significant degree of soil compaction and topsoil degradation, making it difficult for plants to thrive. Restoration would occur naturally (eventually) as more topsoil is formed by weathering rocks and decomposing organic matter, but soil formation takes thousands of years. Strategic human intervention is necessary to restore fertility in the near future, so my goal is to create an actionable plan for sustainable and long-lasting remediation.Come join me at Wakeman Town Farm in Tim's Kitchen to hear more about what I have been working on this summer, and to discuss soil restoration and small-scale sustainable practices, and solutions for compacted and depleted farmland.
