The Architecture of Urbanity: Designing Cities for Pluralism and Planet

The Athenaeum was established in 1814 as a subscription library, at a time when the free public library system did not exist and collections of books, available for reading or research, were still mostly limited to institutions, schools or colleges.The Athenaeum of Philadelphia nurtures curiosity in members and neighbors, strengthening community through learning and discourse.The Athenaeum of Philadelphia is one of 16 membership libraries that collaborate through the Membership Libraries Group. Some, like the Charleston (est. 1748), New York Society (est. 1754), and Newport (est. 1741) libraries, date from the 18th Century.

Practice for Architecture and Urbanism | PAU

Practice for Architecture and Urbanism | PAU, now in its fifth year of existence, is a New York based architecture studio dedicated to the advancement of sustainable and equitable cities. The practice is led by Vishaan Chakrabarti, the William Wurster Dean of the College of Environmental Design at Berkeley, and Ruchika Modi, the firm’s Managing Principal. Since its inception PAU has publicly committed to what it would not do, including work for dictators, sprawl builders, or the incarceration state. Today the award-winning firm of thirty well-treated architects is designing complex urban projects worldwide including an expansion of Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a master plan for Michigan Central Station on behalf of Ford Motor Company, a revitalization of Brooklyn’s Domino Sugar Refinery, an urban village in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, a new college at Princeton University, an innovation bridge Indianapolis, and a series of self-sponsored advocacy projects under the rubric of PAU:SE—PAU Special Edition.
