The festival of Beltane falls between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice and the name means "bright fire" in Old Irish which scholars link to the god Bel, and Gaulish god Belenos. Beltane was the time of year when the Irish and Scots drove cattle out to summer pastures, after which they held rituals to protect livestock, crops and people, and feasted. May bushes were created, hearth fires were relit from special protective bonfires, Holy wells were visited, May dew was collected, and flowers decorated doors, windows and livestock. Celtic Cétamain traditions featured the Green Man welcoming the emergence of summer, and veneration of Cernnunos, the god of vegetation, as this was a time of growing energy. Norse legends describe this as the time when Odin hung from a tree for nine days. To the ancient Greeks it was the season of Artemis, Hera, and Pan, while the Romans revered Bacchus and Flora. Ancient Roman fire festivals, known as Floralia, honored the sun, with flowers, dancing, and feasting. In Germany, Walpurgisnacht evolved from a Christian feast to Saint Walpurga on the 1st of May with bonfires and protection rituals. Calan Mai is the Welsh May Day of feasting, mock battles and bawdy songs, while the eve before is Spirit Night, when spirits are about, and divination is possible. Witch thorns, Straw men, dancing, bonfires, singing, drinking mead, elderberry or rhubarb wine were all part of the celebration, and May Eve was a time when fairies and witches roamed and enchanted unsuspecting people. Beltane traditions still practiced today include maypoles, May flowers, bonfires, fire dancers, and ribald courtship rituals, represented by the May Queen and the Green Man.
