Grapevine Industry Icon Seminar Series - Update on Red Blotch Virus Spread and Disease Management by Prof. Marc Fuchs of Cornell University

<p>Abstract:  Grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV) is transmitted by the three-cornered alfalfa hopper (TCAH) but no information is available on transmission biology.  Similarly, limited information is available on disease spread dynamics in vineyards. In this presentation, the latest advances on GRBV transmission biology will be discussed and recent findings on disease spread in the vineyard will be presented.  Disease progress was investigated in three vineyards with a disparate initial inoculum prevalence. Spread was documented in two vineyards in California but not in a vineyard in New York. Increase in annual disease incidence (5% and 0.1%) was unrelated to the estimated initial source of inoculum at planting (1% and 40%) in the two study vineyards in California. Spread in California vineyards was mainly localized, suggesting the planting material as the primary source of virus inoculum. Populations of the TCAH were absent in the New York vineyard and low in the California vineyards. Furthermore, all cover crops, particularly legume species which are preferred hosts of the TCAH, tested negative for GRBV, suggesting their minimal role, if any, as inoculum reservoirs. Together these findings support the elimination of virus inoculum sources as an actionable disease management strategy across vineyards.</p><p>Thank you.</p>
