From February 23 - 27, 2021, Black Spatial Relics (BSR) is hosting its second annual convening. Building on our work to create Black spaces for creation, exploration, and community, this will be a free and virtual convening that will feature our 2020 artists-in-residence and several other Black performance makers and scholars from around Philadelphia and beyond.Join us for an opening keynote by Ebony Noelle Golden!Join in a welcoming from Black Spatial Relics Director, Arielle Julia Brown, an original work by Viktor L Ewing-Givens, and an additional welcoming from Deborah Thomas (Center for Experimental Ethnography). About the Keynote Speaker: <ul><li>Ebony Noelle Golden is an artist, scholar, and culture strategist from Houston, Texas now living in the village of Harlem. She serves as the CEO of Betty&#x27;s Daughter Arts Collaborative, LLC and artistic director of Jupiter Performance Studio. Perpetual FREEdom is her North Star. www.bettysdaughterarts.com</li></ul>About the Presenters:<ul><li> Arielle Julia Brown is a creative producer, social practice artist and dramaturg. Emerging from her work and research around U.S. slavery, racial terror and justice, Arielle is committed to supporting and creating Black performance work that commands imaginative and material space for social transformation. She is the Founder and Director of Black Spatial Relics, a new performance residency about slavery, justice and freedom. Arielle is a co-creative producer on Remember2019, a performance and residency project based in Phillips County, Arkansas. Arielle’s work and writing on Black political performance has been published in the anthology Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Frontlines, ARTS.BLACK and Public Art Dialogue among others. Arielle is a performance curator for Monument Lab. She received her B.A. from Pomona College and was the 2015-2017 graduate fellow with the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University where she received an M.A. in Public Humanities.</li></ul><ul><li>Viktor le Givens is a Creative thought thinker... memory worker and keeper of the archive from Houston, Texas. Givens is currently, stewarding a land-based artist residency in rural east Texas where practitioners of various media will be afforded the time and space to commune with the natural and sociocultural landscape of the rural south as a method of generating new creative works.</li><li>Deborah A. Thomas is the R. Jean Brownlee Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also core faculty in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, holds a secondary appointment with Penn GSE, and is a member of the graduate groups in English, Africana Studies, and the School of Social Policy and Practice. Prior to her appointment at Penn, she spent two years as a Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center for the Americas at Wesleyan University, and four years teaching in the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Duke University. Dr. Thomas is the Editor-in-Chief of American Anthropologist, the flagship journal of the American Anthropological Association, and was editor of the journal Transforming Anthropology from 2007-2010. </li></ul>Black Spatial Relics is a national residency program, founded and directed by Arielle Julia Brown. The Black Spatial Relics Residency is made possible with support from the JKW Foundation, Black Seed, W. Trust, Added Velocity, Monument Lab, and independent donors.
