Welcome to The 7th Annual Womanist Ethnography ConferenceWomanist ethnographic research brings focus to Black women’s experiences, narratives and concerns as the starting point to work toward social analysis and change.The Womanist Ethnography Conference increases the representation of Black women in culture and society and is concerned with attending to multiple facets of the diversity that exists among Black women.We will consider the distinct nature of womanist ethnography in practice and theory—and how it leads us to “color outside the lines” imposed by artificial forms of objectivity.This year we are very excited to have an intergenerational, multidisciplinary, and context rich program.Cost:Professionals: $35Students: FreePanelists include:Rev. Dr. Stephanie Crumpton, practical theologian, trauma theorist, professor, and author of “We Gon’ Be Alright”. “We Gon’ Be Alright: Resistance and Healing in Black Movement Spaces, 2012-2021 is a profound exploration of Black activism and organizing during a pivotal decade in American history. Rev. Dr. Stephanie M. Crumpton explores the practices of care, reflection, and creativity that Black activists employed to heal and resist amidst the sociopolitical turbulence from the Obama era through the first Trump presidency.Candice M. NunnTelfort (They/She) is a doctoral candidate at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Pastoral Theology, Personality, and Culture - Clinical Track at the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago. With a Bachelor of Science in Religious Studies and Political Science from Lincoln University, a Historically Black College and University (“HBCU”), and a Master of Theological Studies from Vanderbilt Divinity School in Religion, Psychology, and Culture, Candice brings a rich interdisciplinary background to their research.Currently, they work at Openings, a clinic for Psychosis and Extreme States at Depth Counseling in Chicago, Illinois. Their dissertation lives at the confluence of antiBlackness, psychosis and psychoanalysis.Christina Desert's is a Ph.D. Candidate at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Désert’s work focuses on African heritage religions, particularly Haitian Vodou, with special attention to women’s kinship, the archive and the poetics, and the natural world. Her writing has appeared in is a Ph.D. Candidate at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Her writing has appeared in ConSpiracies: Breathing Together the Breath of Life, Harvard Divinity School’s Religious and Spiritual Life’s online journal. She has presented her work at the American Academy of Religion, KOSANBA, the Haitian Studies Association, and the Caribbean Studies Association. Désert received a BA in psychology and French from College of Saint Benedict, her MSW from Baylor University, and her MDIV from Harvard Divinity School.Rev. Dr. Teresa L. Smallwood is a public theologian and the Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs at United Lutheran Seminary. Prior to finding a second career in academia, Smallwood practiced law and served as an assistant district attorney in her home state of North Carolina for nearly 20 years. She then earned a master’s in divinity from Howard University and a doctorate from Chicago Theological Seminary. Author of "Public Theology and Violent Rhetoric Examined in a Queer Womanist Critical Ethnography", Smallwood emphasises how spiritual self-assessment, ritual, and indigenous spiritual practices offer a way to wholeness and healing. Drawing from Yoruba epistemology, this work offers a framework for rebirth, renewal, and reclamation.
