Flipping the Script on Grading: Alternative, Anti-Racist Grading Practices

Transformative Learning in the Humanities

This event is part of TLH's Spring 2021 event series on active and participatory learning methods.

There is a clear need at Baruch for anti-racist pedagogical practices. This forum will discuss assessment and some alternatives to the current practices of grading at Baruch. Participants will begin with a writing prompt asking how they would like to be graded. If they are students, suggested content for their response will include their employment, primary and secondary languages, space and time for college study, and any significant responsibilities. Using these responses, Ian Singleton will ask participants specific questions regarding how they want to be graded. The speaker will also summarize and provide information as needed on alternative grading practices such as contract grading and “A for All” grading. This event offers a space and time to listen to students about how they want faculty to evaluate their work. Students can elucidate their expectations of faculty, especially of adjunct faculty, at Baruch. Such discussion will undoubtedly lead to real data about students’ expectations and desires for grading practices. Although this forum will take place in a First-Year Writing class, a Humanities class, the organizer will ask students to consider grading in areas such as Science and Mathematics. An important purpose of this forum will be to record responses from a student body more diverse than the faculty body teaching them. How are faculty grading practices affecting students? At the end of the forum, participants will write again in a survey asking the same questions as before. One question in that survey will serve as a vote between the two alternative grading practices offered. Participants may “vote” for the best alternative for all courses. These responses, this vote, and a recording of the discussion will provide data on student response to alternative grading practices. It will also serve as a model for future forums on assessment.
