Join our Education Team for a morning of celebrating Jamaica Bay!

WHAT:Celebrate City of Water Day with the Jamaica Bay Festival! From the sandy shore to the deeper waters, there’s so much to discover! Learn all about the waters of Jamaica Bay and explore some of the wildlife that lives here.Join our Environmental Education Team for a free beginner paddle.We will provide all necessary equipment including: kayak, paddles, PFD (personal floatation device)WHEN: Two sessions on Saturday, July 12th from 10am to 12pm.Kayaking Session A: 10am-11am (Please arrive 10 minutes prior to session start).Kayaking Session B: 11am- 12pm (Please arrive 10 minutes prior to session start).Paddling session participants must register. Open Paddles are open to all skill levels, but meant for beginner paddlers! Participants must be at least 14 years old to paddle. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.If a session is sold out, email scspeducation@parks.ny.gov or call (718)-277-2420 ext 5003 to learn how to be added to the waitlist.WHERE: This programs will be held at the Penn Water Access Area, a 10 minute walk from the parking lot along gravel trails. Paddlers must be on-time for their session or they will not be permitted on the water.IMPORTANT INFORMATION for paddlers: All participants must sign a NY State Parks waiver in order to paddle. Participants are expected to wear a PFD at all times while on the water.Our boats are all double sit-on top kayaks. Boats will be assigned based on group needs.You will have to wade into the water to get into the kayak, so please wear secure footwear that you do not mind getting wet and muddy. You will not be allowed to paddle or walk on the shoreline barefoot, as there are sharp rocks and shells in the sand.All paddling programs are weather dependent and subject to cancelation or rescheduling if weather, tide, or water conditions are deemed unsafe by the instructor.
