The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a multi-purpose cultural space in the Southeast community of Newport News, Virginia. Originally built as the Walter Reed School in 1917, our historic building has been restored and open to the public since October 2008.In addition to the 276-seat Ella Fitzgerald Theater, we haverooms for meetings and events, as well as studio space for visual and performing arts. The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a facility of theCity of Newport Newsdepartment of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

Develop the Artist in You with Abralene White

<h3>This class is available online and in-person. To switch to the online registration, <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/139529407213" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">click here.</a></h3><p>Students with beginning to intermediate skills in acrylic painting will learn how to create a variety of brush strokes; learn the elements of art and principles of design to create exceptional art compositions; explore how to use color to express a feeling or mood in their art; and the use of art vocabulary to discuss their art and that of well-known artists.</p><p>*Supplies are not included. Thirty-seven of those years were as a Newport News Public Schools Art Teacher.
