Meet the Author with Ed Simon

Teetotal Initiative is a Pittsburgh-based 501(c)3 non-profit focused on individuals committed to a sober lifestyle.Teetotal Initiative’s inclusive and sober-focused high-quality programming addresses some of the most common causes of relapse - isolation, boredom, and loneliness. Our mission is to help individuals to sustain sobriety. Our goal is to enhance quality of life and support relapse prevention through free events, activities, and high-quality programming.​As the first-of-its-kind recreational sober community, Teetotal Initiative inspires a stigma-free and celebratory social atmosphere, promoting meaningful sobriety and community opportunities for all, regardless of their journey to recovery. We welcome all forms of recovery and are not aligned to any specific program. Teetotal Initiative does not provide support groups or professional medical services. Instead, we care for the “rest of life” that happens outside of formal treatment and group support and are a complement to anyone’s recovery toolbox.

This event is perfect for history buffs, as Ed will explore the “Alternative History of Pittsburgh!”​About Ed Simon:Ed Simon is the Public Humanities Special Faculty in the English Department of Carnegie Mellon University and the Editor-in-Chief for <a href="http://www.beltmag.com/" title="http://www.beltmag.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Belt Magazine</a> and the forthcoming Pittsburgh Review of Books, as well as being a contributing editor to <a href="https://www.themontrealreview.com/Ed_Simon.php" title="https://www.themontrealreview.com/Ed_Simon.php" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The</a> <a href="https://www.themontrealreview.com/Ed_Simon.php" title="https://www.themontrealreview.com/Ed_Simon.php" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Montreal Review. </a>He is also an emeritus staff writer at <a href="https://themillions.com/about-the-millions" title="https://themillions.com/about-the-millions" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Millions, </a>which the New York Times has called the “indispensable literary site,” as well as being a monthly columnist for both <a href="https://3quarksdaily.com/" title="https://3quarksdaily.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">3 Quarks Daily</a> and<a href="http://www.lithub.com/" title="http://www.lithub.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> LitHub.</a> In addition to those roles, Simon has been the Creative Nonfiction Editor at Carnegie Mellon University Press since 2024.​Originally a native of Pittsburgh, he has lived in New York City, Boston, Washington DC, and now his hometown again. He holds a PhD in English from Lehigh University and has taught as a college instructor for two decades, in disciplines including English literature and composition, journalism, rhetoric, religious studies, and political science, at institutions including Point Park University, Duquesne University, Lehigh University, Bentley University, American University, Mt. Aloysius College and Carnegie Mellon University.
