Campus Privacy Officer, Pegah K. Parsi, talks about privacy issues from the global pandemic to protests to  political campaigning & voting.

2020 was a constant assault on our lives, from the global pandemic to protest movements and socially distanced political campaigning and voting, issues that will continue well into 2021. Experts, advocates, and ordinary citizens have been busy addressing each of these – and more! – with novel and ambitious proposals. As varied as all of these innovative solutions are, they all have one thing in common: their reliance on personal data. But, as with any use of personal data, there are attendant privacy risks to individuals and society. The rapid development of large-scale programs in our unusual circumstances prompts the need for careful consideration of the use and protection of personal data along the way. Join us to discuss the privacy issues of the day and learn about the practices that should guide program design.Zoom information will be sent the morning of the training for all registered participants.We allow users to register and/or attend using an alternative to their full name, such as their initials or an appropriate pseudonym for privacy. However, due to concerns around Zoombombing and inappropriate access, anyone using a pseudonym (or other name alternative) must let us know in advance. Workshop participants may use appropriate pseudonyms for registration or attendance if they contact us at ucsdprivacy@ucsd.edu before the session with their real name and email address. We will remove unknown participants from sessions.The talk will begin at 1:00pm. We are asking participants to login 15 minutes early in order to enter a zoom waiting room where their registration will be verified and they will then be let in the meeting. If you cannot make it to the meeting 15 minutes early, still please attend. We are encouraging everyone who is able to join us a few minutes early to ensure a timely start.
