Teaching with Primary Sources: Modern Medicine in Brooklyn

We are the education department of Brooklyn Public Library's Center for Brooklyn History. Our signature partnership program offers classes rare access to original archival materials while completing a customized, standards-based project. Join us as we debut our newest curated set of archival materials for classroom use--our <a href="https://www.bklynlibrary.org/sites/default/files/documents/brooklyn-collection/connections/Modern%20Medicine%20PP.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Modern Medicine in Brooklyn Primary Source Packet</a>--and discuss strategies for teaching with primary sources in the middle- and high school classroom. Modern Medicine in Brooklyn looks at a timeline of medical advances in Brooklyn and includes images, artifacts, articles, political cartoons, and ephemera covering epidemics including, but not limited to, smallpox, the 1918 Influenza pandemic, antibiotics and vaccinations, the AIDS epidemic, health-related public service announcements, and modern day medicine. This primary source packet is a great addition for providing context to a conversation with students around the current COVID-19 pandemic. This workshop, hosted by science educator and school librarian, Rachel Chapman, and librarian and educator, Jen Hoyer, is designed for educators in all content areas who are interested in teaching with primary sources in the classroom, whether with this primary source packet or any selection of primary sources. We will model some strategies and best practices for students to think critically, construct meaning, and analyze information from a variety of sources. We will be sharing graphic organizers developed by Brooklyn Connections educators and the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (IFC) to help support and scaffold students’ learning. Attendees of this event are eligible for 1 CTLE credit.
