Join Society of Young Inklings and Daria Peoples-Riley for a night of creative family fun.

Looking for a lively change of pace and splash of creative fun? Come on over and play your way to the page with Society of Young Inklings’ Family Story Nights.This spring and summer, we’re offering three Family Story Nights. Each features an author leading your family through a creative workshop designed to help you stretch your thinking skills and tap into your unique voice.Stories offer us ways to play together, to connect, and to share our perspective and ideas. At Young Inklings, we tap into storytelling in playful, hands-on ways that bypass resistance so that we can access wholehearted connection.In this workshop, <a href="https://www.dariapeoples.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Daria Peoples-Riley</a> will share her process to create picture books inspired by the spoken word art form. She will guide family members in writing and illustrating a spoken word poem inspired by the joys and concerns of their heart. To conclude the session, Daria will encourage creators to share a line of their writing as a way to honor the tradition of oral poetry.Daria Peoples-Riley's first job was at nine years old in the children's section of her hometown library in Paso Robles, California. She worked a little, but she mostly read picture books. Daria loved basketball, drawing, and painting. Her dad gave her art lessons in their garage on Rose Lane, and Daria's mom rescued her first self-portrait from the kitchen trash can, and had it professionally framed the next day. Today, it hangs in her parents' living room as a reminder that our life's purpose almost always introduces itself to us as a child. Daria earned a BA in English from UC Santa Barbara, where she found herself shelving books in the library once again and reading the writings of many notable authors. After earning a Masters in Education and 10 years of teaching, Daria became a full-time author and illustrator. Daria lives in Las Vegas with her family. Daria Peoples-Riley’s debut picture book THIS IS IT was published with Greenwillow/HarperCollins (February 2018) and I GOT NEXT (July 2019). Daria is also the illustrator of GLORIA TAKES A STAND by Jessica M. Rinker, a picture book biography about the life and work of Gloria Steinem (Bloomsbury, March 2019). Her newest book is America My Love, America My Heart (April 2021).Tickets are by donation and only one ticket is needed per household. The suggested donation amount is $25 per family.
