Homeroom Presents BLANKBOX 2025: The Robot Is Present

Homeroom is an independent, nonprofit resource for creative Chicagoans to develop and produce original arts programming, free from financial and artistic constraints. Homeroom supports a diverse array of artistic practices from music, dance, and film to visual arts, literature, and puppetry. Homeroom promotes experimentation and artistic growth by encouraging multidisciplinary approaches and collaborations for a far-reaching impact.

Homeroom is proud to present the newest iteration of Blank Box, in conjunction with Theatre Y’s Sandbox Series and with generous support from Cliff Dwellers.BlankBox will feature Gold Grrl’s new work “The Robot is Present,” a multimedia ensemble exploration of current intersections between race, technology, and identity.7 pm doors, 8 pm showFREE ($20 donation suggested)BYOB <h2>About The Artist:</h2>GoldGrrl is a Chicago-based Afrofuturist artist and performer whose work spans diasporic art, negritude, and interdisciplinary activism. Rooted in her mother’s Panamanian folkloric dance troupe, she honed her craft in Chicago’s underground street dance scene as a b-girl before rising in ballroom, winning titles like Midwest Awards Ball. Her alias emerged from her early career as “The Golden Lady,” a human statue whose gilded poise redefined physical performance. Now, GoldGrrl merges metal music with radical advocacy, dubbed “fierceness of femininity” by AfroPunk. Her lyrics confront racial equity, LGBTQIA+ rights, and immigration, showcased at venues like the MCA, Green Mill, and Chicago Cultural Center. A vocal presence in media (Vocalo, Chicago Reader), she also bridges technology and Black culture as a computer scientist, exploring dehumanization and ethnicity’s societal impacts.
