The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a multi-purpose cultural space in the Southeast community of Newport News, Virginia. Originally built as the Walter Reed School in 1917, our historic building has been restored and open to the public since October 2008.In addition to the 276-seat Ella Fitzgerald Theater, we haverooms for meetings and events, as well as studio space for visual and performing arts. The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a facility of theCity of Newport Newsdepartment of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The Light From All Sides artists will return for February's online open mic event!

<p>As the Light From All Sides exhibit is still on display in the Newport News Community Gallery, the artists are continuing to share the positive vibes in this collaboration with our monthly free open mic! Light From All Sides is a multi-artist exhibit that examines interpretations of love through exhilarating artistic expression. The featured artists have each translated the often esoteric and individualized experience into works of art. The resulting expressions are as unique as the combinations of styles and mediums on display, with the common thread being the feeling - best described as stepping out of the darkness and into the sun to feel warmth and light from all sides. </p><p>The exhibit will be on display January 9 - March 6, 2021. Featured in the exhibit are  Alyssa Pickens,  Jasmyne Hampden, Parrish Majestic, ChaVonne Whisonant, Julian Haskins, Mensah Bey, Rain Spann, Poetry Jackson, and Ray Johnson. You don’t want to miss this inspiring evening with our host Nina Brewton, the guest curator Clayton Singleton, and various visual and performing artists involved in Light From All Sides. This event is free and is held online via Zoom Video Conferencing Software.
