A live public discourse on the topic of human nature during the pandemic - are we fundamentally selfish or altruistic?

- Tickets are sold out -Has the pandemic brought out the “beasts” or the “best” in people? During the pandemic, we observe the abundance of selfish behaviours including stock piling essentials, refusal to wear masks and panic buying are prevalent. However, at the same time, we also observe many altruistic efforts including volunteerism, crowdfunding, mask provision projects and internet provision to help the needy.Still, some would argue that humans engage in altruism because they gain something out of it, be it happiness, additional entries in the CV, or tax exemption.This prompts us to question whether selfishness lies deep in our human nature and that we are born to be selfish.
