The League of Women Voters of North and Central San Mateo County (LWVNCSMC) and The League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County (LWVSSMC) to Host Series of Discussions in partnership with One Shoreline: Climate Change Risk and Resiliency In San Mateo County: Rising Sea Level and Increased Wildland Fires - Planning and Solutions.The first of the series is scheduled for February 4, 2021, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM as part of the San Mateo County LWV organizations joint annual County League Day hosted by presidents Marie Baldisseri, LWV of North and Central San Mateo County and Tracy Clark, LWV of South San Mateo County. The public is invited to join in this virtual presentation and discussion featuring San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine and One Shoreline Executive Director Len Materman followed by public discussion moderated by Ann Draper of the LWVSSMC.Stay up to date on event details through our website: www.lwvssmc.org.The focus of the first meeting will be: Overall County. This complex grid of services mean that sea-level rise and wildland fires could affect us all. For example, a flooded highway, wastewater treatment plant, or electrical substation could temporarily shut-down businesses, close roads, and lead to many county-wide disruptions. By planning and working together, we can protect our county’s many assets, including neighborhoods, businesses, parks, and beaches – places we all enjoy.“Due to the intensity of development in low-lying areas close to or in some cases, below sea level, San Mateo County faces serious flood risk from storm events and high tides — a problem that is accelerating with sea-level rise.” Len Materman, Executive Director, One Shoreline.“The League of Women Voters is well-known as a non-partisan organization whose mission is to help educate our communities on critical public issues. We are delighted to undertake - for the first time - a county-wide community discussion series on the impacts of sea-level rise and wildland fires in order to plan our community response. These discussions will focus specifically on geographical areas that have different potential effects and therefore different potential solutions. We hope to spur our neighbors to engage deeply in the topic and offer their thoughts on how we can best prepare ourselves. ” Presidents Marie Baldisseri, LWV of North and Central San Mateo County, and Tracy Clark, LWV of South San Mateo County. One Shoreline and LWV are engaging with the public to inform our communities on these issues and to hear ideas for solutions.
