The third in a 3-part suite of trainings for somatically-trained psychologists.Kink-Affirmative and Trauma-Informed: BDSM in the Therapy Room.BDSM (Bondage, discipline, domination and submission, and sadomasochism) practices are often misunderstood, misrepresented and stigmatized in dominant culture. BDSM, often called kinky practices and sexualities, however, are widespread and therapy clients often seek support by somatic and mental health providers to address a range of issues. In this training, I will provide an introduction to, and overview of, kinky sexualities and practices. We will discuss why and how it is important to be trauma-informed when working with kinky clients, as well as to be affirming of their erotic orientation and/or practices. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own biases, beliefs and values with regards to kinky clients and how to address those. Clinical vignettes will be provided to illustrate how to work ethically and competently with kinky clients from intersectional and trauma-informed perspectives. Red flags in kinky relationships will be discussed so that clear distinctions can be drawn between healthy kinky practices and abusive behaviors, as this is often an area that can be challenging for providers not familiar with kinky practices and communities. Finally, there will be time for dialogue and to address participants’ questions throughout the training. By the end of the workshop, participants should feel more confident and competent in working with kinky clients in affirmative and trauma-informed ways. Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this training, participants will be able to:<ul><li>describe and list examples of BDSM and kinky practices; </li><li>understand what their biases, beliefs and values about kinky practices and clients are; </li><li>distinguish abusive behaviors from consensual BDSM and kinky practices;</li><li>illustrate how they would approach clinical work with kinky clients and when they would refer. </li></ul>All Trainings:Gender as Trauma: an intersectional and somatic perspective.
