WEAD is a pioneering network of feminist eco­artists, educators, curators, and writers working toward the goal of a just and healthy world. We focus on women’s unique perspective in ecological and social justice art. WEAD maintains an invaluable website (weadartists.org) that serves as a virtual gallery of eco­artists work, connects artists and curators with exhibition opportunities, and educates and enlightens through its ground breaking WEAD Magazine.PURPOSETo provide information regarding the ecoart and social justice art fields to artists, curators, writers, art and public art administrators, educators in art and ecology, cross-disciplinary professionals and others.To facilitate international networking among artists working with ecological and social justice issues.To further the fields of, and the understanding of environmental and social justice art.

Women Eco Artists Dialog - WEAD

Two generations ensure the continuity of creativity and lifelong learning in the art-science borderland at University of California.

Emilie Lygren’s poems ask us to look closely then shift our perception wider — from termites flying out of a tree stump to one’s own birth, from tools to our inevitable mortality, from sea glass to islands engulfed by sea level rise. As [her] poems bring us into communion with each other and with the natural world, they also interrogate the constructed world of patriarchal power, perfectionism, and profit. With wonder and play, [her] poems call us into the wildness of our bodies and call our bodies into the earth to be reborn as seeds.- Tehmina Khan, poet and teacher, UC Berkeley Emilie writes essential, elegant poems that help us live our lives and apprehend with deepest gratitude all the gifts surrounding us.– Naomi Shihab Nye Emilie is a poet and educator whose writing enlivens commonplace moments with the meaning and depth they deserve. Her teaching focuses on curiosity and reflection as practices to deepen relationships. She believes poems bring us closer… to ourselves, to one another, and to the world we inhabit. She believes we are all poets.In this Art+Healing program, Emilie will share about the evolution of her practice, how her poetry supports her well-being and how her teaching in the natural world has influenced her creative expression.She will share readings of her writing and guide you through rituals and reflective prompts focused on your relationship to creativity. We will observe and call on parts of the natural world to inform our intentions. We will also write and share poems.This program welcomes ALL levels of creative practitioners, from beginners to those more practiced. Educators will also find inspiration for ways to bring creative practice and natural elements into their teaching.Participants should bring a journal or paper and a writing instrument, such as a pen, pencil or marker. Presenter BioEmilie Lygren is a poet and educator whose work is grounded in curiosity and reverence. Through her work as a curriculum developer at the Lawrence Hall of Science, Emilie has also developed dozens of publications focused on nature journaling, outdoor science education, and social-emotional learning. Emilie’s first book of poetry, What We Were Born For, was chosen by the Young People’s Poet Laureate as a monthly book pick for the Poetry Foundation in 2022. Emilie has taught writing in a variety of contexts: classrooms, research stations, graduate programs, parks, libraries, and beyond. She holds a BA in Geology-Biology from Brown University and an MFA in creative writing from Maharishi International University. Currently, Emilie is a professor of creative writing and a poet in the schools, and is at work on an anthology of poems on mental health for teens and youth.
